The Toefl exam helps you to cope in an academic environment. In other words if you wish to study abroad, need to prove your language skills to attain a scholarship, participate in research and so on you may need to pass this exam.   Your level of English should be a fairly strong Intermediate in order to deal with tasks such as reading a popular science article in the field of biology, history, astronomy or even architecture. You do not need in depth knowledge, however, you have to be able to read in an analytical way and answer the quiz following the text.
